Animal Architecture
Natural architects & some interesting facts:
1. Weaver bird
Did you know? Its the males that weave nests from fine leaf fibers, grass and twigs to lure prospective females. The nests vary in size, shape, material used, and construction techniques from species to species.
2.Beaver
Did you know? Prolific builders that work at night, carrying mud and stones with their fore-paws and timber between their teeth. Therefore, its very hard to destroy a beaver dam without removing the beavers, especially if the dam is downstream of an active lodge. Beavers can rebuild such primary dams overnight! They can also create a series of dams along a river.
3. Termite
Did you know? In tropical savannas, large conical termite mounds ("termitaria") can grow up to an extreme height of 9 meters (30 feet). This was the record set by Macrotermes species in Africa.
4. Organ pipe mud dauber
Their name says it all, the shape of their nest reminds you of pipe organs in Gothic cathedrals.
5. Spider
Did you know? Spiders use their own body for measurements during the process of making an orb web.Low gravity also affects the outcome of a spider's web. In a space experiment on Skylab, July 28, 1073, its was found that while space webs were finer than earth webs, there were variations in thickness in places. Earth webs have been observed to have uniform thickness.
6. Bee
Did you know? A honeycomb cell has six sides. Bees maintain a temperature of 92-93 degrees Fahrenheit in their central brood nest regardless of whether the outside temperature is 110 or -40 degrees.
